1. Explain the latest with COVID 19 and what precautions you are taking to enable you to practise and safely return to our space.

Each of our clients' safety is our absolute priority so at this time we are closely checking the government's advice on a daily basis and will do our utmost to adhere to the government's guidelines on return.

To ensure as much knowledge as possible and to be fully prepared for the return to work we have both completed a Health, Safety and Hygiene Returning to Work Covid -19 Course for Therapists which is accredited by FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapists).

Moving forward we will provide a Covid 19 policy to all clients providing a detailed description of how we will be practising as safely as possible on our return. This policy will include details on following:

    • New and improved risk assessment to include covid 19

- checking for common symptoms of the virus

- being aware of individuals deemed at a higher risk or in the vulnerable category.

    • Use of the correct PPE and additional cleaning and sterilisation processes adhering to government guidelines.

    • Social distance measures applied where possible.

    • Increased ventilation and time gap between clients

    • Contactless card payment and minimal paper use where possible including online consultation and disclaimer forms

    • Updated disclaimer forms for both yourself and your client.

    • Additional aftercare updates

    • Client responsibility/transparency of current health

    • New cancellation policy, with flexibility for anyone experiencing symptoms to reschedule their treatment without incurring a penalty

3.What is the difference between Sports Massage and a ‘normal massage?’

There are numerous types of massage practises available to us which is fantastic but can also be a bit confusing. They all come with different benefits and it’s sometimes hard to know which one is right for you.

The first thing to say is that a Sports Massage is not just an exclusive treatment for athletes and can be extremely beneficial for everyone.

Compared to what people consider a ‘normal massage’ a Sports Massage just works in a more targeted way to help with specific problem areas in the body. It still delivers all the same benefits of a more traditional massage treatment including relaxation, stress and tension relief as well as using specific soft tissue and remedial techniques to help to treat and prevent minor soft tissue injuries and improve areas such as posture, flexibility, range of movement, circulation, muscle tension and pain while also helping to increase energy and performance levels.

4. Can I have a massage if I’m pregnant?

The good news is that yes you can have a massage when you are pregnant however you should only ever receive a massage from a therapist who is a fully qualified pregnancy massage therapist and it is also advised to wait until after the first trimester before seeking a treatment. We at Pummel and Knead are both qualified in pregnancy massage and can offer these treatments as part of our packages.

5. Do you use oils?

With our express seated treatments the use of oil is optional and not a necessity. We always ask each client their preference at the beginning of a treatment and if it is applied it is kept to a minimal and we always use a good quality plant based oil to benefit the skin.

With our longer treatments on the massage bed oil is required and again a good quality plant based oil is used and any allergies to these oils are always checked for before application.

6. How long does a treatment take? **

Our most popular Express Treatments are usually 15 minutes each, but these can be designed to last between 10 - 30 minutes in length, depending on your preference.

Our longer more bespoke treatments with use of the massage table are usually between 30 minutes and 1hr in length.

7. Do I have to wear anything special or bring anything with me ***

The Express Treatment is performed on top of loose fitting clothes so you don’t need to worry about wearing something specific or bringing anything along. We would suggest for your comfort to wear something that is loose and comfortable for you to get the most out of your treatments and so you don’t feel restricted while we are working on your shoulders.

8. Do I have to lie down at work?

All of our Express Treatments are performed seated with the use of our portable desk equipment so no lying down required. These treatments are specifically designed to take place at the desk or in a stationary space such as a meeting room.

If your company decided to opt for a bespoke package with our massage tables then this would then most likely require a treatment lying down, however these are pre planned with priority focusing on client comfort and privacy.

9. Are you able to give advice on medical problems?

Having knowledge in human anatomy means that we can offer some advice with regards to certain soft tissue based injuries or issues, however we would always ask that you seek medical advice for any ongoing issues or problems that are affecting you as our knowledge is limited. Furthermore, as therapists, we are not there to diagnose conditions or illnesses; again, always consult a medical practitioner for any health concerns you have.

10. Are there any contraindications to having a massage?

There are contraindications that must be checked through before receiving a massage. Prior to treatment each client will be sent a list and asked to look through and declare any injuries or illness’ before receiving a treatment. For a full list of the current contraindications please email pummelandknead@gmail.com

11. Is massage painful?

You may experience a degree of strong pressure and redness during and after your massage to the areas that we are treating as we are working through tight muscle fibres and helping to increase fresh blood flow and circulation, but you shouldn't feel pain but instead a sense of tension release. The treatment is very much led by you, the client, and our therapists always check in to make sure the pressure is at a good level.

12. If I have an injury, can massage help?

Massage can be very beneficial to an injury if used in the correct way.

There are two types of injury: Acute and Chronic.

An Acute injury is the name for a sudden injury such as a sprained ankle that has just happened. If you have an acute injury then massage should be avoided for 48-72 hrs to let the inflammation in the area reduce. After this period you can with caution apply gentle massage on the surrounding areas of the injury to ease these muscles that tend to tighten up as a defence mechanism. Depending on the severity of the injury and once any inflammation has reduced or an open wound has healed (1 -2 weeks) you can again with caution apply massage to the injured area to help reduce any scar tissue and tension in the area.

A chronic injury is the name to describe an injury that develops over time and usually through overuse. Massage can be of great benefit here and can help to release tension, work through built up scar tissue and help with the rehabilitation process of an overworked area.

*Please be aware, the number of treatments that we can offer per hour may alter depending on the time required between treatments for hand-washing and sanitation of surfaces

**Please be mindful that the time-slot allocated for your treatment includes your consultation, time spent preparing yourself for the treatment (adjusting hair & clothing), the hands on treatment, as well as any necessary stretching or after-care advice.

*** The current government guidelines require therapists to wear a mask whilst offering treatments. Clients are only required to wear a mask if they are in a position where there is face to face contact, eg. lying in a supine position (on your back) or seated facing the therapist.
